Arcane Warrior also doesn't lend itself well to pure nuker builds (mainly because of fatigue/mana upkeep) and all Shapeshifted forms have a baseline armor amount which makes the one other thing that AW brings to the table (the ability to wear heavier armor with Combat Magic) kind of pointless anyway. If you're the sort of person who enjoys micromanaging, however, then the Shapeshifter is an excellent spec for you simply because each form gives you more abilities to play around with at the cost of just a single talent point each. This applies to ordinary spells, and is necessary for the next three blood mage spells. I think it worked out ok, but I can't be 100% sure, since my own character was waaay too overpowered for the companions to make any significant difference.

The main problem with Shapeshifter is that it's micromanagement intensive - a single point in spider form gives you two extra abilities (Web and Poison Spit) for the price of one talent point, for example, but in order to make the most of out of those abilities you need to be continuously weaving in and out of Shapeshifter forms. The 2nd time I played the game I played an Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage and had Morrigan, Wynne and Leliana with me. Keep in mind that whatever build you manage to find, it'll always take a couple of levels, and if you get burned out through the origin story, you won't get too far in the game.
